skip to content ↓ foreword winners join friends foreword shining scribes young writers’ project is a short-story writing competition open to primary school children in years 5 & 6. the aim is to encourage pupils to display their creative writing skills by producing an original piece of fiction within a 500-word limit. submitted entries will be judged alongside entries from all competing schools. the top 10 winners will receive prizes and have their work displayed on this website in addition to having their stories voiced by professional actors. all submitted entries will be made available in a paperback book, allowing pupils the thrilling experience of becoming a published author. we hope that your school will join us and that your pupils are enthused to take part in this great opportunity that allows them to express their fictional writing skills. richard white shining scribes founder. this competition celebrates the wonder and freedom of writing and stories, and i hope it’s brought pleasure to all those who took part. as writers, we all start with the letters of the alphabet and a few punctuation marks: simple tools that give infinite possibilities. there are no limits; there is no right and wrong. you don’t need expensive equipment. you don’t need to go on a course. all you need is your own imagination, and some questions to start with. if you really want to write, what can possibly stop you? what if can be enough to get you started. what if a girl fell down a rabbit-hole? what if an unusually gifted boy went to a school for wizards? what if a bear arrived from peru in need of a good home? what if we saw the great war through the eyes of a horse? each of these famous stories was just the glimmer of an idea once, in the mind of an author who thought well, what if…? what might happen? i wonder … and set off with pen and paper, or a typewriter or a laptop, to find out. it’s hard to imagine a world without stories. we all remember stories we loved as children; stories we’ve read over and over again, or love to hear told or read to us. we experience stories in books, on television, in comics, in films and in plays and pantomimes. we make up stories about our own lives, often exaggerating, missing bits out, or adding funny details. we can’t help but live in stories. writers like myself are often asked where do you get your ideas from? it’s a hard question to answer. even though it’s been put to me hundreds or more likely thousands of times, i still don’t know what people expect me to say. there are so many possible answers. each book or story might have started in a different way: from personal experience, from another story, from something in the news, from a special place, or from a dream, fear or ambition. we’re all full of ideas. if you want to write, the trick is to catch hold of one of them and keep thinking about it. can you build a story around it? is it enough? well, there’s a good way to start. ask yourself that important question what if … ? then, once you’re on your way, more and more questions will come to you. you don’t have to know all the answers, especially at first. a large part of the fun of writing is finding out what happens. a story lives, grows, changes– your story might surprise you. i’m looking forward to reading the stories written by the young people featured here. who knows: one of these young writers could some day write a story as famous as those of alice, harry potter, paddington or joey – a story that becomes part of our lives, one of the tales that swirl about in our minds and enlarge our world. that doesn’t happen to many books, though probably every author dreams of it. more important is to know that each of the writers who entered the competition has written a story which no one else in the world could have written. i think that’s rather special. linda newbery http://www.lindanewbery.co.uk the brockenspectre by linda newbery is out now. foreword shining scribes young writers’ project is a short-story writing competition open to primary school children in years 5 & 6. the aim is to encourage pupils to display their creative writing skills by producing an original piece of fiction within a 500-word limit. submitted entries will be judged alongside entries from all competing schools. the top 10 winners will receive prizes and have their work displayed on this website in addition to having their stories voiced by professional actors. all submitted entries will be made available in a paperback book, allowing pupils the thrilling experience of becoming a published author. we hope that your school will join us and that your pupils are enthused to take part in this great opportunity that allows them to express their fictional writing skills. richard white shining scribes founder. this competition celebrates the wonder and freedom of writing and stories, and i hope it’s brought pleasure to all those who took part. as writers, we all start with the letters of the alphabet and a few punctuation marks: simple tools that give infinite possibilities. there are no limits; there is no right and wrong. you don’t need expensive equipment. you don’t need to go on a course. all you need is your own imagination, and some questions to start with. if you really want to write, what can possibly stop you?
